Indeed, one can easily find marvelous creatures like phoenixes or dragons in the period’s texts or in its visual art. The prominence of marvels in medieval culture, whether in its literature, philosophy, religion, or visual art, is well known. For the transliteration of individual letters, I follow the American Library Association and Library of Congress (ALA-LC) Romanization table (). Following convention, I use the English form of common Arabic words such as “Quran” and “sharia,” including names like Avicenna and Averroes. For instance, I leave elidible alifs in, except in the presence of proclitics like wa- and fa. I transliterate the Arabic quotations literally, without marking al-ḥurūf al-shamsīya or other elisions. For poetry, I provide line numbers, but otherwise I cite page numbers except in a few cases that are explained in the notes. I cite editions along with their editors except where none is given. I have expanded manuscript and print abbreviations silently. I have regularized the letters s, f, u, and v, as well as capitalization, but I otherwise preserve the form of the editions, which differ in their orthography. I provide the original language for all medieval sources, but not for modern studies. I often alter the translations that I cite, though I do so without comment. In the text that follows, I provide my own translations unless otherwise noted.
